FreeWomenandthePathofAwakening
Dear Learning Community,
We write to invite you to join us on Saturday May 1st, 2021 for
Creativity & the Dharma:
A special exploration of
“The Poems of the First Free Women”
& Principles of the Path of Awakening
In preparation for this online session, please read the following enlightening and inspiring short book of poems of Realization, and choose at least one jewel from this collection to bring with you to share with the group:
THE FIRST FREE WOMEN
Poems of the Early Buddhist Nuns
translated by Matty Weingast
We will be exploring the theme of “Creativity and the Dharma” as we unpack universal Principles of the Path
that these poems speak to so beautifully in such moving and authentic ways. These three core Principles of the Path are: Renunciation (“the fierce determination to be free”);
The Awakening Mind of Bodhicitta (the intention to awaken for the benefit of all beings);
and Emptiness (interdependence & interbeing).
Joanna Macy described her experience of reading this book as:
“like opening a window and letting a clean, fresh wind blow through my being.”
Note: The Amazon paperback is easily and swiftly available – but the Kindle isn’t available until June. However, a free, on-line version of these poems by another translator, is also available. See links at: https://www.dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=Category:Therigatha
We hope you can join us for this special session and allow these fresh breezes of Awakening to blow through your being as well!

“The Elephant” by Bhikshuni Dantika
While walking along the river
after a long day meditating on Vulture Peak,
I watched an elephant splashing its way
out of the water and up the bank.
Hello, my friend, a man waiting there said,
scratching the elephant behind its ear.
Did you have a good bath?
The elephant stretched out its leg,
the man climbed up,
and the two rode off like that—
together.
Seeing what had once been so wild
now a friend and companion to this good man,
I took a seat under the nearest tree
and reached out a gentle hand
to my own mind.
Truly, I thought, this is why
I came to the woods.
May the blessings of wisdom and compassion prevail
in our hearts and in our world,
Michelle 🐘 Joel
